The rug and the sofa's front legs

The rule that distinguishes an integrated rug from a placed rug

A rug too small, isolated in the middle of a room, floats like a bathmat. Three correct positions exist, and one error to avoid.

§ 01The principle

A rug in a living room delimits a zone of use and anchors the furniture in that zone. The most common mistake: a rug too small that touches no furniture. It floats, looking like a forgotten bathmat.

Three correct positions exist.

Formula to remember

Front legs on rug · All legs on rug · Rug in front

Never a floating rug in the middle.

§ 02Putting it into practice

Position 1: front legs on the rug. The sofa's front legs rest on the rug (15-20 cm). Most common in medium rooms (15-25 m²). Rug width: sofa width + 30-60 cm each side. Depth: 1.80 to 2.30 m.

Position 2: all furniture on the rug. Entire sofa, armchairs and coffee table on the rug. Luxurious position for large rooms (30 m²+). Rug often 3 × 4 m or more.

Position 3: rug in front of wall-mounted sofa. Sofa against wall, rug in front without touching legs. Typical for small rooms (under 15 m²). Rug must be at least the length of the sofa.

Absolutely avoid position 4: the floating rug. Smaller than the zone of use, touching no furniture. If your rug is too small, use position 3 rather than centring it.

Do
  • 01Choose rug dimensions based on the intended position
  • 02Extend beyond the sofa by 30 to 60 cm on each side
  • 03Prefer a rug slightly too large to one slightly too small
  • 04Centre the rug on the conversation zone
Avoid
  • 01A 1.40 × 2 m rug in front of a 2.40 m sofa
  • 02Leaving the rug floating without touching any furniture
  • 03Choosing the rug before the sofa

§ 03Professional variations

Pierre Yovanovitch works almost exclusively in position 2 (all legs on the rug). His rugs take on architectural dimension, sometimes 4 × 5 metres.

A fashionable practice: layering two rugs (rug-on-rug). A large neutral jute rug on the floor, and a smaller patterned kilim on top, slightly offset.

In one sentence

The rug anchors the sofa, it never floats in the middle.
