Frame alignment: top or centre
When several artworks sit side by side, two options only
Several frames aligned randomly give an impression of disorder. Two choices: alignment by the top or alignment by the centre.

§ 01The principle
When several artworks are placed side by side, they must align on a common horizontal line. Without alignment, the row appears disordered and amateur.
Two choices, producing different effects.
Alignment by the top. All frames have their upper edge on the same horizontal line. More formal, "museum" effect. Works well when frames have similar heights.
Alignment by the centre. All frames have their horizontal median axis on the same line. More contemporary effect. Works well when frames vary greatly in size.
To avoid: alignment by the bottom, which creates a rigid "row of soldiers" effect when frames have different heights.

Top alignment: classic · Centre alignment: contemporary · Never bottom
One rule per wall, never mixed.
§ 02Putting it into practice
When to choose top alignment. Frames with similar heights; you want a formal or classical effect; the row passes under a cornice or architectural moulding.
When to choose centre alignment. Frames with very different sizes; you want a contemporary or relaxed effect; the row passes at eye level on a long wall.
How to mark the line. With a laser level or pencil and spirit level, draw a light horizontal line on the wall at the reference height. For top alignment, this is where all frame tops will go. For centre alignment, it is where all centres will go. This line is the absolute reference, do not deviate.
Spacing between frames. Tight row: 5-8 cm between frames. Airy row: 10-15 cm. Beyond 15 cm, the composition "dilutes" and frames lose their connection.
- 01Choose an alignment (top or centre) before any hanging
- 02Draw the reference line in pencil before drilling
- 03Space frames regularly (5-15 cm)
- 04Test with masking tape before fixing
- 01A row of frames aligned by the bottom
- 02Mixing top and centre alignment on the same wall
- 03Random spacing between frames
- 04Aligning "by feel" without drawing the line
§ 03Professional variations
Art galleries work almost exclusively with centre alignment, with artwork centres at 1.52-1.57 m from the floor. It is the international convention.
A tip: mix horizontal and vertical formats in the same row. With centre alignment, the eye instinctively unifies the different formats. Successfully contemporary effect.
By the top or by the centre, but one rule per wall.
