The gallery wall for under £80

Posters, frames, composition. Three sources and the method

A successful gallery wall for under £80, it is doable. Three sources of free or cheap posters and the method.

A gallery wall can cost £500 if you buy everything new from Desenio. It can cost less than £80 with a little patience.

Source 1, past exhibition posters (free to £15)

Museums (Centre Pompidou, Orsay, Louvre, MAM) sell their old exhibition posters for £5-15. For Paris, the Centre Pompidou has a shop with very cheap end-of-line stock.

Where to look. Physical museum shops (always cheaper than online). Sunday flea markets. Vinted Vinted with a search for "exhibition poster".

Source 2, personal photos printed (£10-25)

Have your best photos printed in A3 or A4 format at Cheerz, Photobox, or in store at Polaroid Originals. Black and white photos as a priority (you will avoid garish colours), or very saturated photos handled with discipline.

Cost. Budget £2-4 for A4, £5-8 for A3.

Source 3, thrifted vintage lithographs (£5-30)

Old botanical lithographs, scientific illustration plates, vintage cinema posters. Goldmines on Le Bon Coin Le Bon Coin, Emmaüs Emmaüs or Selency Selency.

The frames (£40-60 for 9-11 frames)

Budget IKEA option. Knoppäng or Ribba frames at £4-8 each IKEA. Clean effect, varied formats.

Thrift option. Flea markets or Emmaüs Emmaüs, patinated wood frames at £2-5 each. More signature effect but requires sorting.

Mix tip. Combine 70% neutral IKEA frames plus 30% thrifted patinated frames. A "lived-in" effect without overload.

The method (see rule 07.5)

1. Gather 9-11 posters/photos 2. Compose on the floor the final layout (1 h) 3. Make paper templates to the exact dimensions 4. Tape the templates to the wall with masking tape 5. Live with it 48 h, adjust 6. Drill and hang

Total budget

11 mixed-source posters, £30-50. 11 IKEA frames plus 2-3 thrifted, £35-45. £80 maximum total for a gallery wall of 11 pieces in asymmetric composition.

## Key takeaways

Three sources mixed together work better than one. Paper template method essential (see rule 07.5). The rule, mix horizontal and vertical formats, mix new and thrifted frames, maintain coherence through the palette (all in black and white, or all in the living room's palette).
