The vase, a silent focal point
One beautiful vase does more than ten mediocre ones
The vase is the most neutral decorative object. It can receive a branch, a flower or nothing. And it is the one that changes a room the most.

§ 01The principle
The vase is the most universal decorative object. It can be placed anywhere, adapted to any style, receive any plant or remain empty. But its power lies in restraint: one beautiful vase does more than ten mediocre ones.
Three functions of a well-chosen vase. A sculptural presence: even empty, a beautiful vase commands attention. A living rhythm: filled with cut branches, wild flowers, or a single stem, it changes the room by season and week. A material accent: ceramic, glass, metal, stone, the vase adds a texture that complements the room's other materials.

One beautiful vase rather than ten mediocre ones · Size adapted to the surface
A small vase on a coffee table. A medium vase on a console. A large vase on the floor.
§ 02Putting it into practice
Choosing the right material. Raw ceramic (white, grey, terracotta): the universal neutral, works anywhere. Blown glass (transparent or coloured): more fragile, very beautiful in a sunny space. Stone or marble: more architectural, for formal interiors. Glazed ceramic: shinier, more traditional or Art Deco.
Choosing the right size. The vase must be proportional to the surface it occupies. On a 60 cm coffee table: 20-25 cm vase. On a 1.20 m console: 30-40 cm vase. On the floor: 50-60 cm or more.
Choosing what to put in it. Dried or fresh flowers, a single stem, natural branches (eucalyptus, olive, flowering cherry), palm leaves, nothing at all. A beautiful empty vase is as legitimate as a full one.
Placing the vase. Centre of a console (in triangular composition with two other objects). Centre of a dining table for meals. Corner of a living room, placed on the floor for large models. On a shelf, in a mixed composition with books and objects.
In small interiors. One beautiful medium vase is enough. Place it on the coffee table or entrance console. Change the plants by season, and the room lives.
- 01Invest in one beautiful vase rather than several basic ones
- 02Place it alone or in a triangular composition
- 03Renew the plants by season
- 04Adapt the size to the placement
- 01A fragile vase on a high shelf (risk of falling)
- 02Buying a vase "because it looks pretty" without considering where to put it
- 03Multiplying small identical vases
- 04Keeping wilted flowers beyond a week
§ 03Professional variations
Pierre Yovanovitch works with contemporary ceramicists for his projects. Bespoke vases, signed by Eric Roinestad, Aaron Poritz, Adam Silverman. These pieces become artworks as much as containers.
Astier de Villatte has become an absolute reference in decorative ceramics. Their vases in white glazed earthenware with artisan patinas are recognisable at a glance and timeless.
A sophisticated practice: vase placed directly on the floor (large model, 60 cm+), without pedestal, in a room corner. Raw and architectural effect, very Studio KO.
One beautiful vase is enough; ten mediocre ones clutter.

Trinkets grouped by material family
Three ceramics together are worth more than one ceramic, one book, one candle, one figurine
07.2Triangular composition
Three objects at three different heights, the eye traces a triangle
07.12The rule of thirds: in photography and in decoration
Divide the surface in thirds, place strong elements on the lines
