The laundry room or pantry, do not neglect it

The laundry room (room dedicated to laundry and linen) and the pantry (food storage to complement the kitchen) are utility rooms. When they exist, they must not be neglected on the pretext that they are "functional".

A well-considered laundry room means less time wasted each week, less disorder spilling over onto the other rooms, and storage that does not pollute the bathroom or the kitchen.

Four elements to integrate.

Vertical stacking of the washing machine and dryer. Saves 60 cm of floor space. Stacking kit at Bosch, Miele, Samsung (£35-70).

Vertical storage of products. Slim wall shelves (15-20 cm deep) for detergents, fabric softeners, household products. Without overflowing.

Folding or sorting surface. Worktop at 90 cm height (like a kitchen) to fold linen directly after drying.

Sorting dirty linen. Basket(s) on wheels, ideally with compartments (white, colours, black, delicate).

Stacking the machines.

Check compatibility (the machines must be stackable, dedicated kit). Depth around 60 cm, stacked height around 1.80 m. Saves precious floor space.

Alternative. Washer-dryer (all-in-one), depth 60 cm, height 85 cm. Less effective than two separate machines, but maximum space saving.

Vertical storage.

Wall shelves. Ideal height, 1.60 to 1.90 m, accessible standing. Depth 15-25 cm. Detergents in bottles grouped, household products, brooms (handle up, in a broom holder).

Pegboard for household tools and utensils. Pro and signature effect. Brands such as IKEA Skadis.

Harmonised jars or containers. To decant ugly detergents into aesthetic bottles. Reduces the chaotic visual of the various brands.

The folding worktop.

A clear surface at 90 cm where you fold the linen coming out of the dryer. Ideally above the machine or above a low piece of furniture in the laundry room.

Without a dedicated surface, the linen migrates to the bed or the sofa, which becomes cluttered.

The dirty linen sorting.

Baskets on wheels. Three baskets sorted by colour (white, colours, black). Pro effect, quickly rolled in front of the machine.

Fixed slatted baskets. More aesthetic, but require carrying linen by hand.

Hanging bag. For very small laundry rooms (fabric bag hooked behind the door).

The pantry.

If you have a pantry (cupboard or room dedicated to food storage), treat it with the same rigour.

Harmonised jars (Le Parfait type) for pasta, rice, pulses, cereals. Pro and signature effect, perfect readability.

Readable labels on each container.

FIFO rotation (First In, First Out) to avoid forgotten products at the back.

The case of accommodation without a dedicated laundry room.

If you have no dedicated room, integrate the machines into the bathroom or a cupboard. Vertical stacking for space saving. Curtain or doors to visually hide when not in use.

In a small interior. Stacked machines in a 70 cm × 70 cm cupboard. Shelf above for products. Dirty linen basket in the bathroom. It is minimalist but functional.

American houses often integrate the mudroom (functional entrance) plus the laundry room into a single room. Ultra-functional effect, now a European trend.

Large families invest in bespoke laundry rooms with multiple machines, immense folding surface, integrated dressing area for clean linen. The laundry room becomes a strategic room of the home.
