The ugly radiator, three solutions
Hide, paint, or replace. How to decide?
The old cast-iron radiator or the white electric panel breaks the aesthetic. Three solutions depending on your situation and budget.
The radiator is the most neglected element of decoration. Three solutions depending on the type.
Solution 1, paint in the wall colour (£30-50, two hours)
The simplest solution. Repainting the radiator exactly the colour of the wall makes it visually disappear. Works on steel radiators (factory-painted), not on old cast iron.
What you'll need. Specialist radiator paint (heat-resistant to 80°C) Leroy Merlin or acrylic matt paint on a metal undercoat. Budget £30-50.
Method. Turn the radiator off (cold). Lightly sand with grit 180 to break the sheen. Metal undercoat in one coat. Matt paint in 2 coats.
Common mistake. Choosing a very dark colour on a thin-metal radiator, which will run very hot (dark colours absorb heat, the radiator can feel hotter).
Solution 2, the wooden radiator cover (£80-300)
A wooden case with vented grilles that completely conceals the radiator. Becomes a useful console or bench. Ideal under a window or in the entrance hall.
What you'll need. Off-the-shelf radiator cover Maisons du Monde or Leroy Merlin, £80-200. Bespoke by a joiner, £200-500.
Important. Must have vented grilles or slats on the front and a gap at the top (10 cm minimum), otherwise you lose 30% of the heat output.
Solution 3, replace with a designer radiator (£300-1,500)
The designer radiator (coloured towel rail, vertical matt black radiator, premium flat model) becomes a decorative feature.
Brands. Acova, Zehnder, Cinier (top end). From £300 for a standard model at Castorama Castorama or Leroy Merlin Leroy Merlin, £800-1,500 for designer models.
Special case, the bathroom. The matt black or brass vertical towel rail has become a classic, very on-trend. An investment that transforms the room.
How to choose
- Renter, tight budget. Solution 1 (paint). - Owner, big visible radiator. Solution 2 (radiator cover). - Major renovation. Solution 3 (replacement).
## Key takeaways
The radiator is never neutral. Either it disappears (wall-colour paint, radiator cover), or it becomes a feature (designer radiator embraced). The rule, never leave an ugly new white radiator on a wall painted in colour (it becomes a stain).
