The summer-to-autumn transition in decoration

The September ritual to shift into autumn mode in two hours

The arrival of autumn in September calls for a small decorative ritual to prepare the home without changing the furniture.

September marks the summer-to-autumn transition. The home calls for a few changes to accompany the seasonal shift. Everything can be done in a half-day.

1. Replace fresh flowers with dried branches

Summer is ending, fresh floral arrangements become less obvious. Switch to dried branches (dried eucalyptus, maple branches, pampas, cotton, wheat) that last all autumn.

Where to look. Craft markets, Pinterest for inspiration, sites like Maisons du Monde Maisons du Monde or florists specialising in dried branches (£15-40).

2. Bring out the first warmer textiles

Not yet full winter, but a heavy linen throw (not velvet) on the sofa, and a few light boucle cushions or hemp ones. Cocoon prep, not full enveloping yet.

Where to look. Heavy linen throws at Caravane Caravane (£60-150), boucle from IKEA IKEA (£15-40).

3. Change the candles

Transitional scents: autumn leaves, vetiver, papyrus, cedar. Not yet vanilla or beeswax (full winter), no longer citrus (summer).

Where to look. Diptyque (autumn collection), Cire Trudon, Maison Louis Marie. On a budget, IKEA IKEA at £5-10 a candle.

4. Adjust the lighting

Switch into "evening mode" earlier. Switch on the ambient lamps from 6pm (instead of 7-8pm in summer). Check that all bulbs are at 2700 K (see rule 02.2 and 09.6).

**If you have connected lighting (Philips Hue Amazon)**, programme the lamps to switch on at 6pm.

5. Rotate the textile wardrobe

The tip is not only decorative. Put the sandals away, bring out the boots at the entrance. The home visually signals the seasonal change.

For the entrance baskets. Replace the summer hat basket with one for autumn hats and gloves. Wicker baskets (IKEA, Maisons du Monde) serve all year round, their contents change.

6. Compose an "autumn scene"

On a console or a shelf, create a small autumnal scene. A raw ceramic vase plus 2-3 dried branches plus a seasonal book plus a candle. Triangular composition (see rule 07.2).

Visual tip. Mix three textures in the scene: smooth ceramic plus rough branches plus soft fabric (see rule 06.5).

7. The sensory ritual

Put on new autumn music (Spotify "autumn" playlist, jazz, ambient). Prepare the first mulled wine or the first hot chocolate. Put away the summer reading, open the autumn book bought for the occasion.

## Key takeaways

The summer-to-autumn transition takes an hour of work for 2-3 months of sensory benefit. Dried branches plus transitional textiles plus seasonal candles plus earlier lighting plus composed scene = immediate atmosphere. The rule, start by removing what belongs to summer (sandals, fresh flowers, citrus candles), then introduce autumn progressively.
