The hidden utility space in 1 m²
When the home has no dedicated room, here is the solution
A proper utility space in 1 m², it is possible. Here is the layout that works.
No dedicated utility room? Here is how to create a functional one inside a 1 m² cupboard (often 70 cm wide by 70 cm deep).
Column configuration
At the bottom, the washing machine (60 cm deep, 85 cm tall, 60 cm wide). Any standard front-loader model.
Above, the tumble dryer stacked on the washing machine. Stacking with a dedicated kit, non-negotiable (sold by Bosch, Miele, Samsung for £40-80). Without the kit, danger of falling.
Above the tumble dryer, a shelf for detergents and softeners. About 1.80 m from the floor.
The interior fit-out
On the inside of the door. Hooks to hang the cylinder vacuum, the broom, the dustpan. No cost, maximum space saving.
Above the machines. A single shelf at 1.75 m height, 25 cm deep. On this shelf, detergents decanted into matching bottles (Le Parfait type or soap bottles from Scandinavian brands) plus softeners plus stain removers. The effect is immediately tidier than original packaging.
Where to look. Clear bottles with dispenser caps Amazon at £5-10 each. Adhesive labels, home-made or printable.
On the floor, in front of the machines. A laundry basket on wheels (not a fixed basket) for dirty laundry. Three compartments (whites, colours, darks). Easy to pull out, rolls to wherever you need it.
Where to look. IKEA Risatorp laundry basket IKEA or Joseph Joseph Amazon.
If you want to fold on the spot
Difficult in 1 m². Solution, fold on the kitchen worktop or on the dining table immediately after drying. If the utility cupboard opens into the kitchen, even better.
Drying rack
A wall-mounted drying rack or a ceiling-mounted one like the Sheila Maid for the British. Pulls down when you need it, folds away otherwise.
Where to look. Vintage thrifted hanging rail, £30-80. Modern model at Maisons du Monde Maisons du Monde or Manomano ManoMano.
Ventilation
Essential, otherwise humidity builds up. At a minimum, a high air vent. Ideally, an extractor fan linked to the cupboard light.
## Key takeaways
Stacked machines (dedicated kit) plus a single shelf above with matching bottles plus a laundry basket on wheels on the floor. Total cost £200-400 excluding machines. The rule, decanting detergents into matching containers turns a visual mess into a tidy technical space (see rule 08.21).
